Registration question.?

I know people will be reprimanding me for being a dumb dumb, but please hold those comments. I bought a used car about a year ago, I went to AAA to register it and the previous owner already smogged and registered it for 2009. The smog the previous owner gave me was 2 days over their requirements for me to register it. I had/have no money so I figured I'd just register it when the day comes. The woman took my money of $68 and just said "bring back a smog sheet and that'll complete the registration". A month goes by and I get a reminder from the DMV to register the car. Still had no money so ignored it. Well now it's 2009 and I need to register it. I was under the impression the car was in my name since the woman took my money and I received mail about it from the DMV, but after getting pulled over for having past due registration and I received the ticket, I see the registered owner on the vehicle is still the man who sold me the car. I've moved 3 times so I'm very disorganized at the moment and I can't remember what I did with the pink slip. How would I register the vehicle now? There's just a lot of crap going on in my life for the past year so it's been insanely crazy for me so no negative comments would be greatly appreciated. Also what would the approximate fees be?
